Stimulus check update: These families will get $3,600 in 2022

BALTIMORE (WBFF) — Congress and the White House are still debating the possibility of new stimulus checks in 2022.

Right now, the two sides don't seem close. One of the hangups is over the expanded federal Child Tax Credit that was part of the American Rescue Plan signed into law in March 2021. Most American families received either $250 or $300 payments per child for the second half of the year, totaling either $1,500 or $1,800. Those families will be able to claim the second half of the tax credit when they file their taxes in 2022.

However some families, for whatever reason, either did not receive or chose not to receive those payments.

Families who qualify for the expanded federal Child Tax Credit and did not receive the payments will be able to claim the entire amount when they file their taxes in 2022. For families with children under 6 years old, that's $3,600. Families with children between 6 and 17 years old will get $3,000.

As for extending the tax credit into 2022, President Joe Biden wants the child tax credit to continue into 2022. It was part of the president's Build Back Better plan. However, Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., said that he wouldn't vote for the bill. Manchin has previously said that he wants the child tax credit to continue but wants to limit the benefit to people with jobs.
