Carol Channing was an Award-winning American stage actress, comedian, and singer. She was best known for the Broadway musical Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1949) and Hello, Dolly! (1964). Her film credits include Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967) and Skidoo (1968). Carol Elaine Channing was born on January 31, 1921, in Seattle, Washington. Her parents were George and Adelaide. She was an only child. Channing attended Lowell High School in San Francisco followed by Bennington College in Vermont. She majored in drama but dropped out before completing a degree.

CAREER
Channing made her stage debut in a 1941 production of ‘No For an Answer’. Later that year she served as an understudy for Eve Arden in the Broadway musical ‘Let’s Face It’. She won a Theatre World Award for her role in Lend an Ear (1948). Channing held the lead role as “Lorelei Lee” in the Broadway musical Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1949). It was during this role that she introduced her signature song “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend”. The role of Lorelei was reprised in 1951. She won Tony Award nominations for The Vamp (1955) and Show Girl (1961).

Channing’s next big role was that of “Dolly Levi” in the hit musical Hello, Dolly! (1964). Her performance won the Tony Award for best actress in a musical. She won a Golden Globe Award plus an Academy Award nomination for her supporting role in Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967). Channing’s film credits include The First Traveling Saleslady (1956) with Ginger Rogers, and Skidoo (1968) with Jackie Gleason. She’s made appearances on television shows like What’s My Line?, and The Ed Sullivan Show. She’s also done voice roles for the series Where’s Waldo?, The Addams Family, and for the animated films Happily Ever After (1993) and Thumbelina (1994).

Channing was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 1981. She was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Tony Award in 1995. Her star was added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame in February 1960. Channing’s autobiography, Just Lucky I Guess, was published in 2002.
