A man who was killed in a single-engine plane crash in Maryland has been identified as a retired U.S. Army Major General, a high-ranking military leader.

The Harford County Sheriff's Office identified him as Anthony W. Potts, 59, of Aberdeen.

Emergency personnel responded to a field in Havre De Grace Tuesday shortly before 7:30 p.m. Crews checked the area and found the wreckage of a Piper PA-28, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.

Potts was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the sole occupant of the plane, and no injuries were reported on the ground, according to Sandi Gallion, President of Level Volunteer Fire Company.

A news release from the U.S. Army noted Potts was a major general at Aberdeen Proving Ground, assigned as the program executive officer for command, control, and communications-tactical. Potts recently resigned from service.

Officials from the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash. A cause has not yet been provided.
