Boku no Hero Academia Tsuyu Asui 1/8th Scale BF/TT Figure Review MyFigureCollection.net
I ended up getting this figure as an anniversary gift from my girlfriend; back in March...at least it was ordered then. After a long delay, she was finally released and now I have my anniversary present to review!
From the "Boku no Hero Academia" anime, this is Bell Fine / Takara Tomy's Hero Suit version of Tsuyu Asui:
Each photo can be clicked on to give a full-size view of the image, even if the image itself doesn't display.
Here's her in the box:
Asui Tsuyu (or Tsuyu Asui) comes from the anime series, "Boku no Hero Academia / My Hero Academia". She is not the definitive main girl of the anime by any means (it's arguable who would be, if anyone is); but easily one of the main characters in the anime.
The box has a good amount of English and Japanese on it, with the most prominent parts being in Japanese (as it is a Japanese release). The box does show off all of the necessary information, like the actual figure, the name of the anime, the name of the character, the name of the company and the name of the figure series as well. This particular figure is made by Takara Tomy and Bell Fine (one as manufacturer, one as producer)
This figure was delayed for over 2 months, sadly...originally scheduled in March and ending up with a mid-May release instead.
The size of the box is actually really impressive; given that this is a 1/8th scale figure. The box is actually 12" tall!
Back of the box:
The back of the box does have some interesting features on it; including the character's name again, the word, "SPLASH!" (since she's a girl with frog powers...I guess) and a view of the alternate head for her.
Parts:
There are a lot of parts with this figure, all of them packaged really well inside of the protective plastic bubble. Here's the list:
View spoiler-- Tsuyu Asui herself (with face missing tongue and goggles-head attached)
-- Base
-- "SPLASH!" plaque
-- Alternate hair bangs
-- Alternate tongueless face
-- Tongue
-- Headband for the back of her head
-- Instructions
Instructions:
She comes with a full-sized instruction sheet, since she does come with a fair number of parts (as shown above). The instructions show how to attach her tongue to the face with a hole by the mouth, how to attach the band around the back of her goggles, attach her to the base, attach the "SPLASH!" plaque, and how to swap out her face parts.
Base:
This is one of the nicest looking bases for a figure I have personally owned. Most bases are very generic, something like a solid black color or white color. Even the more interesting ones might only have some text printed on them or a design sculpted onto a flat base; but this one is 3 dimensional and looks great!
Of course only the water wave in the back is sculpted; placed on top of a flat base that has a dot effect on it to mimic water. Normally that might detract from a figure, but it gives it a certain style that looks really good paired together...like the 3D wave and the dots need each other in order to look good; they would not work on their own, individually.
The "SPLASH!" plaque simply pushes into the base at the front. There's only 2 minor issues with the plaque though: First is that is doesn't snap in at all or plug in securely, so it is really easy to knock it out of place when changing parts on the figure or if accidentally bumped. Secondly, why "SPLASH!"? It would make sense if she said in it the anime or it was the name of one of her attacks or something like that...but just a random English word that is associated with water? Why not her name or something like that instead?
Out of the box, without base:
The figure is not able to stand on her own without the base; but if leaned against something, it is possible to get her up like I did in the photo.
Something that was a really impressive feature that stood out right away was the connector peg on her foot: It is made of metal! It is sculpted with a groove in it that plugs directly into the base hole only one way, to ensure the base and figure are not damaged trying to connect them. Also, with a metal peg, the connection is strong and sure to last a long time without damage.
Also Tsuyu comes packaged with her face that is supposed to be used with the tongue sticking out, but the tongue is not in place. It's kind of odd that the normal face wasn't used instead when packaged, as it looks exactly the same as the other one but without the obvious hole glaring out by her mouth.
With base, front view:
The figure looks really stunning from the front! The sculpting and painting on this figure is just fantastic! Tsuyu looks really good in her hero suit; with details in all the right places and vibrant, well-applied paints apps to perfectly compliment her amazingly accurate sculpt!
Side views:
From the side it is easier to see where the band from the back of the goggles attaches; as it is not visible from the front. It's also easier to see how she plugs directly into the base at the foot as well.
There is a tiny hair gap on this side of the figure, which is the only real flaw I see with the sculpt overall. It is very minor, however, and only visible from this side.
Back view:
Even the back of the base was really well done; with the water effect being fully painted on all sides and from all angles. The back of the figure doesn't show much though; mostly just her hair and her butt.
Top view:
Looking at the top is a good way to see more of the layout of the figure without the hair getting in the way. The lines were the face parts swap out and the back of the goggles attach is easier to see from this angle.
The only part of the base that doesn't have any paint apps/stickers applied to it (besides the bottom rim) is the back of the "SPLASH!" plaque, which can also be better seen from this angle.
Close-up:
Up close Tsuyu is very pretty and well done in all aspects. Her eyes have a shine to them that does make it hard to photograph; but that's more of a photography-based problem than an actual problem with the figure itself.
The most impressive part of her face, in this case, has to be the goggles. Instead of just being painted green orbs, they are actually clear-ish green pieces that really have some depth to them, when looked at in the light! They look amazing and really give her goggles some vibrance (my photos don't do them justice)!
Alternate faces/hair parts:
Tsuyu actually comes with an alternate tongue-less face as well as a hair front that has no goggles. This means that, coupled with removing the back part of the goggles from her head, she can have up to 4 different face combinations!
These include the already shown tongued face with goggles combo, as well as tongued with no goggles:
Tongue-less with goggles:
And tongue-less without goggles:
Tsuyu herself, with base, is about 8" tall, so she is a really good size as well.
Overall:
Tsuyu Asui is my personal favorite girl from Boku no Hero Academia (as far as I have seen in the anime) and this version of her really does her justice! The sculpting is amazing; the painting is really well done and looks great in all areas; the base looks fantastic and the optional parts are a good variety for a static figure.
There are a few minor issues with her, such as the hair gap on the one side, the loose fitting plaque on the base, and the the odd choice for an English word to use with her base...but these are very, very trivial. Certainly nothing that detracts from the figure at all.
The biggest problems with this figure though would have be the relatively high price of her, and the fact that she was delayed 2 months. Now that she is finally out; I would say that she is worth the price, though. If you can afford her, this is a great figure of Tsuyu to get in her hero outfit!
Highly recommended! No play value, only for display.
